With the summer well established in Napier, Southern faced an in-form Hawke's Bay United under hot conditions.
It was already 2-2 between Hawke’s Bay and Southern United by half-time. Benjamin Wade gave Southern an early lead off a break with a great finish from a tight angle following a pass from Garbhan Coughlan.
Southern United struggled to establish a proper rhythm in the first half, and Hawke's Bay enjoyed a fair amount of the pall and chances followed. Southern's goal was soon cancelled out by Sho Goto and the Bay then hit the front themselves through Sam Mason-Smith.
The hosts failed to take that advantage into the break as Garbhan Coughlan equalised just before the half-time whistle off a steal from the centre-back.
Southern came out in the second half with noticeably more fervor, with Southern creating plenty chances to score. However, despite the added pressure on the Hawke's Bay goal, it wasn't to be for Southern.
A bending free kick from Maxime Oliveri mid-way through the second spell proved enough to earn a third win of the campaign for Hawke’s Bay.
Southern United host Canterbury United next weekend before the league takes a short Christmas break.
