A well-fought game under trying conditions in Auckland ended in a devastating 2-1 loss to Waitakere United, as they fell victim to a late game winner.
Matters were not made easy for the traveling team headed into this game, as a cancelled flight led to an extended wait in the airport, topped off by being taken to wrong ground and delaying kick off.
Southern were up against a committed Waitakere side, but Southern notched the first goal of the game, as a well-constructed counter attack was finished off by Adam Hewson in the 22nd minute.
However, Waitakere equalised, and then went on to claim all three points as Waitakere's left back ran the length of the left-hand side, and with pace and power finished with aplomb.
Southern United look to bounce back next weekend as they host Tasman United.
