Southern United youth headed north to face Hawke's Bay United knowing a win would still put them in contention for the league title.
Southern had the better portion of possession early in the first half, yet struggled to find the back of the net. In possession, Southern ran much of their play through 15-year-old Oliver Colloty who put in an impressive performance. Both teams had a few half-chances in a fairly even first half but failed to convert and really get going.
In the second half, Southern United immediately mounted pressure from the get go, winning a corner in the first minute of second half. Nick Treadwell rose above the goalkepper and two defenders at the back post to power home a header following a cross by Luke McKay.
Southern were on top for the second half and made it count again in the 66th minute from another corner. Luke McKay's cross hit the crossbar, fell out to Cam Anderson, who laid it off for Alex Cox to deliver back into the box. Blake Weston got in front of his man and directed the ball into the back of the net.
From there on, it was all Southern United. Just over five minutes later Cam Anderson robbed the HBU centre-back inside his own box, and squared the ball across for Adam Hewson to tap in.
Hawke's Bay United were given a lifeline in the 82nd minute after goalkeeper Stewart Catto touched the ball past their forward before having the ball get stuck under his feet, only for the HB striker to tap the ball into an empty net.
Sub Tim O’Farrell was running riot down the left once he came on, overlapping, linking up with midfield and created a few half chances. He grabbed himself an assist in the 87th minute once he broke free in behind the defence and put it on a plate for Oliver Colloty to tap home from 12 yards and his first goal of the campaign.
Southern host Canterbury United next weekend to conclude the 2018 National Youth League season.
Also, join us and wish all the best to Oliver Colloty and Jak Stephenson as they played their last game of the season for Southern, and head to the National Age Grade tournament in Wellington as representatives of Football South. Good luck boys!
